From Kelaria to the Defner Mountain Refuge & the Livadi of Arachova
A mythical journey on the mountain of Apollo and the Muses
Mount Parnassos is more than just a mountain. It is a place of myth, history, and living natural energy. Known as the mountain of Apollo and the Muses, and one of Greece’s most striking mountain landscapes, Parnassos in spring transforms into a mosaic of meadows, forests, and open ridgelines, where fresh green slopes still meet the last white traces of winter.
This route is a true springtime exploration of nature, silence, and mountain heritage. Suitable for hikers of all levels, it offers gentle elevation changes, a rich variety of scenery, and meaningful stops at places with strong natural and symbolic character.
Route Description
We begin at Kelaria, near the Parnassos Ski Center, where the alpine landscape opens into highland meadows, fir forests, and pale limestone slopes.
When conditions allow, the horizon reveals some of the mountain’s most prominent peaks:
Liakoura (2,457 m), the highest summit of Parnassos
Tsarkos
Gerontovrachos
The trail leads us through:
open mountain passes
fir and pine forests
rocky formations
spring meadows filled with color and subtle mountain scents
Parnassos is home to endemic plants, rich alpine flora, and native wildlife, turning every step into a small discovery.
Stop at the Michalis Defner Mountain Refuge
Midway along the route, we reach the historic Michalis Defner Mountain Refuge. It is a perfect place to rest, take in the clean mountain air, and enjoy wide, open views across the slopes of Parnassos.
Here, spring truly comes alive — sunlight, clear skies, and the mountain unfolding around us in waves of green and stone.
Drakokarkaro Cave – A Place of History and Memory
A short detour of about 800 meters leads us to Drakokarkaro Cave, a site deeply connected to local history and collective memory.
Beside the cave stands a small chapel dedicated to the Transfiguration of Christ, adding a quiet spiritual note to this powerful and reflective stop along the trail.
Livadi of Parnassos – An Open Horizon
We continue toward the Livadi of Parnassos, a wide, open highland meadow that in spring becomes a green mountain plain. It is an ideal spot for panoramic views, photographs, and a moment to simply stand still and connect with the landscape.
